Decision guide to choosing the right 3D printing material for your project — strength, environment, finish, cost and food safety.
Picking the right material is the single biggest decision you'll make when ordering a 3D print. Choose well and you get a part that lasts for years; choose badly and it warps in the sun, snaps under load, or doesn't fit your application. Here's a plain-English decision guide.
Ask four questions
1. Where will it live? Indoors, outdoors, in a car, underwater, near heat?
2. What does it need to do? Hold weight, flex, snap-fit, look pretty, contact food, conduct heat?
3. How long does it need to last? A one-off prototype, a year, a decade?
4. What's your budget? Material cost is a small part of total cost, but exotic materials add hours of print time too.
The shortlist
PLA — display models, prototypes, indoor decorative parts, packaging. Cheap, easy, beautiful, but softens in heat and is brittle.
PETG — outdoor parts (medium-term), water-contact, snap-fit enclosures, replacement parts that need toughness. Slightly more expensive than PLA, much tougher.
ABS — indoor engineering parts, electronics enclosures, automotive interior trim. Tough, heat-resistant, paintable, but yellows in UV and needs a vented printer.
ASA — long-term outdoor parts in direct Australian sun. ABS-like properties plus serious UV resistance.
TPU — anything flexible: gaskets, phone cases, grips, drone bumpers. Comes in different hardnesses.
Nylon (PA12, PA-CF) — high-strength engineering parts, gears, brackets under load, parts that need to flex without breaking. SLS nylon is the workhorse of industrial 3D printing.
Resin (SLA/MSLA) — fine detail: jewellery masters, miniatures, dental models, smooth-finish display parts. Brittle and not for structural use.

Can I change material later?
Yes — your maker can re-print in a different material if the first one doesn't suit. Most are happy to advise upfront to avoid this.
Does material affect price a lot?
Material is usually 10–30% of the print cost. Print time and post-processing matter more. Switching from PLA to ASA might add 20–40% to a small part.
What's the strongest 3D printing material?
For most practical purposes, SLS nylon (especially carbon-fibre-reinforced) is the strongest commonly available 3D printing material in Australia. Metal printing is stronger again but much more expensive.
